2021 EXTERIOR COLOR TRENDS

Updated: Dec 17, 2021

As we happily bid a long, overdue, farewell to the chaos and unrest of 2020 we welcome the new year with the hope and the bright promise of better things to come. Many of our homes have become a place of refuge and safe haven this past year, and for some, the experience has fostered new feelings of sentiment toward the way we feel about our homes.

The word “HOME” is defined as :a place of origin //:a HABITAT// :one’s place of residence : DOMICILE// which speak to the structure and shelter that our home provides. But down the page a little further, you will find the words “AT HOME” defined as :relaxed and comfortable :at ease//:in harmony with the surroundings//:on familiar ground. By simply placing “at” in front of the word "home" the definition changes, adding to it character, depth and new meaning. It reaches beyond the mere structure of a home and subtly shifts our attention to the heart of the home by focusing on the potential of what our home can and should represent to each of us.

The color palette for 2021 seems to reflect this new sense of nostalgia by moving toward more subdued hues. Deep, rich, warm tones offer a sense of coziness, comfort, and safety while optimistic neutrals and vibrant, happy accent colors promise to uplift and soothe the soul. Colors inspired by nature aim to promote the sense of calm, wellness and tranquility we’ve been craving all year. “These comfort colors... offer a certain sense of familiarity and normalcy when facing the unknown.” (Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager, Southern Living).
