Leaking window? Here is what to do...

Updated: Mar 2

If you have a leaking window, it's important to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to your home. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Identify the Source of the Leak: Determine where the water is entering from. It could be coming from the window frame, the glass itself, or the surrounding area. Many times, the leak is coming from an unexpected place, so think outside the box...or window.

  2. Check the Exterior: Inspect the exterior of the window for any visible damage, such as cracked caulk or damaged flashing. Look for gaps or holes around the window frame that could be allowing water to seep in. Even a small hole can be the source of a lot of water.

  3. Clear the Area: Remove any furniture, curtains, or belongings near the window to protect them from water damage.

  4. Temporary Fixes: If the leak is minor and you need a temporary solution, you can apply waterproof tape or sealant to the affected area. This can help prevent further water intrusion until you can address the issue properly. This is temporary, call us if you need to investigate the leak further.

  5. Address Window Frame Issues: If the window frame is damaged or deteriorated, you may need to replace or repair it. This is usually quite apparent, and if you have this issue call Rocky Ridge Exteriors right away!

  6. Replace Caulking and Weather-stripping: In some cases, the leak may be due to worn-out or deteriorated caulking or weather-stripping. Remove the old caulking, clean the area, and apply new caulking and weather-stripping to create a watertight seal. If we were ranking by probability - this one would be at the top - check out the caulking first!

  7. Consult Rocky Ridge Exteriors: We have experienced unprecedented rain this spring here on the Front Range of Colorado. The rain has not necessarily caused leaking, or problems, but it certainly is revealing them. Please don't hesitate to call us and set up a time for us to do a window inspection for free. We can put together a plan to address the leaking and keep your home safe and dry.

Remember, at Rocky Ridge Exteriors we are local, knowledgeable and readily available
